The Lord's Prayer

Today we will be looking at Luke 11:1-4.  Here we have an account of the disciples asking Jesus to teach them how to pray.  Two things are leading them to ask this.  First, they make mention that John had taught his disciples how to pray.  Second, it mentions that Jesus had just finished praying.  There must have been something about the way he prayed that caught their attention.  These disciples had heard plenty prayers through their life.  They are not asking to be taught because they have no learning, but because they can see that the prayers of John’s disciples, and especially Jesus, are very different from what they are used to seeing.

I pray that as we go through this you will be hungry to be able to pray as we see Jesus praying in these verses.  If prayer seems like a chore that you never seem to get around to then please take time to either read or listen to this sermon and ask God to help you embrace Him through prayer.  God clearly intends prayer to be something far more intimate than most of us are used to experiencing.

We Need To Be Taught To Pray

In some ways prayer is like the response of a baby to their need, “Waaah!”  It is an almost unconscious cry regarding our sin and the sin around us.  The Bible speaks of a cry that comes up to God from men and women on the earth.  It is clear in some of those contexts that the people are not actually praying to the Creator.  Often they are worshipping false gods.  Yet, God hears the cry of their hearts.  However, at some point prayer must become a more intimate exchange in which we approach God, not as a child, but as an adult child who knows his father.  Simply put, we need to grow in prayer.  We see the disciples recognizing that need in their selves.  Do you see the need in your own life? 

The foundational part of prayer is the recognition that we need help from God.  As much as the modern age has felt that it can meet all needs, humans are still needy people.  In fact, many of the claims of the past have proven to be more difficult than first believed whether we are talking about viruses or social dynamics.  No matter how great our technology we will never be able to “fix” our spiritual problems or satisfy our spiritual needs without God.  Prayer is the humility to toss arrogance and pride aside, and ask God for help.

Notice that the prayer Jesus gives is not complex.  This prayer is simple enough that a child could pray it and yet great enough that no one can be said to have mastered it.  God is not interested in complex and long oratories from us.  He wants a simple, heart-felt prayer that comes from the heart.  In fact, it could be said that God listens to what our heart is saying more then what our lips are saying.  Isaiah 29:13 “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,” (ESV).

It is good to memorize this prayer and pray it even today.  It is a timeless prayer.  Yet, it is clear from the differences between this version in Luke and the one in Matthew 6 that Jesus does not intend this prayer to be something to memorize only.  A memorized prayer can become a rote prayer.  It can be a mechanical thing that is absent any thought or feeling.  It is best to see this prayer as a firm starting place that we can use as a model to help us move forward.

A Model Prayer

The first phrase teaches us how God wants us to approach Him, as a child to a father.  This is a picture of a close and intimate relationship.  Now I know that earthly parents are not perfect and some are downright evil.  Yet, God cares for you better than any earthly parent could ever care for you.  As we become adults our hearts need to turn from our parents and towards God as our source of strength and help in the time of need.

Now Jesus is speaking to his disciples.  Although all people on earth are God’s children by right of creation, not all are his children spiritually.  In John 1:12 we are told that “as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”  Thus believers in Jesus are not just physical creations of God.  But, we are also a new creation spiritually.  As his spiritual children we can approach with closeness and privilege whether we feel it or not.

Notice that in this prayer Jesus prays for God’s sake first.  He makes three requests on God’s behalf and then three requests on our behalf.  It is important that prayer not be all about us.  We need to learn to put God first.  Pray for God’s things first.  Do you remember when Jesus was talking about anxiety what he said?  He said to seek God’s kingdom first and then all these material needs will be provided.  It may not be our first inclination, but we need to be concerned with God’s things above our things.  Or better put, our things need to find their proper place within the things of God.

The first thing he prays for God is that his name be made holy (hallowed).  One’s name is their reputation and character.  We need to be concerned with God’s reputation and character.  He is good, gracious and just.  Yet, many refuse to see that.  They are convinced that the God of the Bible is not worthy of praise.  We need to pray that God’s reputation and character are viewed and treated as singularly different from all others.  His character should be seen as the highest and best that we seek to attain.  When we are praying for God’s reputation it will make us aware of how our own life helps or hurts God’s reputation. 

The next thing he prays for is for God’s rule; specifically the rule of God’s Savior.  Right now Jesus rules in the lives of believers from heaven.  Thus we can pray for an increase of that rule to other hearts.  However, the Bible promises a time when Christ will return and administer a righteous kingdom from earth.  Thus we are also looking forward to and praying for this coming of Christ.

The third thing is to pray for God’s will.  Do I desire God’s will to be done in my life?  In a sinful world it is easy to desire others to obey the will of God.  However, my heart must be changed as well.  Prayer and reading of the Scriptures is where we cut our teeth on understanding just how good God is and just how important it is to listen to his direction in our lives.

So Jesus prays for the Reputation, the Rule, and the Will of God first.  Then he turns to pray about our needs.  In some ways we all need God’s reputation, rule and will in our lives.  However, God also wants to hear our desires that we have for our self.  Clearly he invites and expects us to share those desires with him.  Part of growing in prayer is learning when a prayer is improperly motivated by our flesh and when it has a proper motivation.

The first need is our daily bread.  This physical need will be with us every day and will not go away.  But we see it prayed for with some restraint.  It is not “Lord, give me enough bread to last forever.”  It is only asking for the bread I will need to day.  There is a foundation of trust here.  Our physical needs have a way of making us go overboard.  But we can approach our heavenly father with the trust that he knows our frame and will provide for us.  Be careful of rejecting prayer and attempting to insulate yourself from any need.  There is a place at which wise preparation goes out of bounds and becomes a neurotic desire to have no needs.  If we follow that path fear and worry will become our masters in the end.  Of course physical food is a reminder of our need for spiritual sustenance, but we shouldn’t be too quick to spiritualize this point.  God cares for our physical needs as much as he does our spiritual.  But he will always prioritize the spiritual over the physical.

Second Jesus says to pray for forgiveness.  Sin is referred to as a debt.  When you think about it you can see that our sins against each other leave us owing confession and repentance to each other.  We also owe each other restitution.  Here we ask God to forgive us because we are forgiving those who have sinned against us.  Clearly it would pose a problem to ask for God’s forgiveness when we refuse to forgive others.  He will not forgive such brazen sin until we break our hard heart and repent.  Yet, what about the sins I have committed against others?  What obligations to others have I left outstanding?  These things can become barriers between us and God if we do not make them right with each other.  Romans 13:8 says, “Owe no one anything, except to love each other.”  This does not mean we never have problems, but that we keep short accounts with each other both in material things and especially in our sins.  To the degree that we see our own sin and deal with it, we will act with greater mercy to those who sin against us.  This will release mercy from God to us.

The third thing Jesus prays for us is God’s leading.  We need God’s direction to avoid the traps and temptations of the evil one.  We are promised that God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to endure.  So the first thing we need to do is drop any excuses we have made and recognize that God wants to help us avoid it.  We must desire to be free from temptation not just externally but also internally.  Too many of us pray for God to take temptation away from us.  But the real problem is our heart’s desire for it.  Prayer is where we learn to lay down those temptations that our heart is drawn towards.  Ultimately Jesus prays that we will be delivered from the devil.  At the cross, Jesus completely neutralized the weapons of the devil.  However, we still need to learn how to walk in the victory that Jesus has secured for us.  We need God’s leading every day and in every way to avoid being manipulated by the devil. 

Don’t let the godlessness of this generation fool you into thinking you can live life without prayer.  Prayer is the fruit of true faith in God and it leads to His help and blessing in our lives.  That blessing takes on many shapes and forms.  However, every one of them will bring us through this world without becoming a casualty to our adversary.  So give yourself to prayer today in a simple yet heart-felt plea to God for the help that you need today!

The Powerful Purpose of Christ

Today we are going to look at the passage in Luke 9:37-45.  Jesus, Peter, John and James are coming down the mountain the day after the transfiguration of Jesus, in which his majesty and glory were revealed to the Three.  If you add that situation with all of the other signs and wonders they had seen, the power of Christ was well impressed upon them.  In this passage there is another powerful encounter as Jesus casts a demon out of a boy.  This kind of power can cause people to drool over all the imagination of what you can do.  Whether it is the people of Israel ready to conquer the Romans and remove the wicked leaders in the Sanhedrin or the disciples imagining their positions of power alongside of Jesus, we would not use such power for the same thing Jesus did. 

Yes, Jesus healed people everywhere he went.  But, that wasn’t his main objective.  Jesus physically couldn’t fix all the difficulties in the world limited within a human body.  But even if he did go around healing people and setting them free from evil spirits, it wouldn’t fix the underlying problem: our sin.   Jesus was sent to deal with the root of mankind’s problem.  We are a world that has come under the sway of sin and spiritual death.  Such a problem needs a spiritual answer.  Yet, that answer is counter-intuitive to our worldly thinking.  Even when we accept Christ’s death on the cross, we tend to see it as an example of how bad hatred is and how good love is.  Jesus is merely an example.  However, the testimony of Scripture is that he was paying the price for the sins of mankind.  Jesus had to lay down his powerful life and die on a cross in order to deal with our sin.  This seems like a waste of power to many people.

Jesus Heals A Possessed Boy

In verses 37-42, a large crowd sees Jesus coming down off the mountain and meets him.  Particularly, there is one gentleman who has a demon possessed boy.  He begs Jesus for help and states that his disciples (the nine who did not go up the mountain) couldn’t cast out the demon.

Now in the gospel of Mark chapter 9 we are given a lot more detail than Luke gives.  Let me go through some of those details.  We are told that the boy has been possessed since he was a small child.  The spirit had caused him to become mute and deaf.  The spirit would often seize the boy near fire or water, thus endangering his life.  He would not only seize, but would also foam and gnash his teeth.  It would be easy to scoff at the idea of a demon and look at these descriptions as antiquated relics of ignorance.  Of course medically we do know much more.  However, they had medicine back then as well.  Even today, there are incidents that modern medicine have problem explaining.  They typically get thrown under the banner of “mental disorders.”  Now not all mental issues have to do with demons.  However, there are three main problems that crop up in some mental issues.  The first is that the mention of Jesus or Scripture triggers events of seizure and difficulty in some.  Secondly, they sometimes speak in a different voice cursing Christ, the Bible, and Christians.  Lastly, it can be brought to the end at a vocal command through the power of Jesus.  These things cannot be mere coincidence or cultural.  So this really does seem to be more than just a brain problem.  There is a spirit that is doing this to the child.

The 9 disciples that had stayed behind had been trying to cast out this demon without success.  Now keep in mind that they had previously gone out throughout Israel healing people and casting out demons.  Jesus had given them authority to do so.  There was something wrong in this situation and they didn’t know what it was.  This goes to show that casting out demons is not about knowing the right words or merely being a disciple of Jesus.  Definitely we need to be connected to Christ in a living relationship.  But there is more to it than that.

In verse 41 Jesus brings up the issue of faith and perversion.  It is not addressed to the disciples, but to the generation as a whole.  It seems that this situation is itself a picture of how degraded Israel had become and how plundered by the enemy they were.  Spirits cannot just possess someone.  They can only take hold of someone when they have willfully opened themselves up to them.  This is done through false religions, occult arts, magic, sorcery, fortune tellers or any other such things.  Somewhere someone in this family has been going to spirits for something and it has resulted in a small child being possessed.  What does faith and perversion have to do with this?  God had given Israel perfect laws that would enable them to walk in power before the spirits of this world.  He had warned them of those spiritual traps the enemy used to gain power over people.  Yet, some did not believe the “old, archaic” words of the Bible.  Instead they willfully went their own way seeking power from sources God had told them not to.  On top of this, Israel had not merely sought power from another source, they also had done so while still claiming to be God’s people.  Their lives had become a mixture of things from the Bible and yet things forbidden in the Bible.  To twist God’s ways is to pervert them.  Thus the child bound by a demon and the impotence of the disciples is a small picture of the problem throughout all of Israel. 

Yet, Jesus tells the man, “If you believe all things are possible.”  To which the man replies, “I believe, help my unbelief.”  Here we see the mercy of Christ.  Though it is frustrating that they are in the situation because of their own willfulness and sin, God still has compassion on us and wants to save us.  Jesus points him back to the root problem.  If you will have faith in God all things are possible.  We are being challenged in this ourselves.  We are a generation that is lacking faith in God’s word and in His ways.  We have called our perversions acceptable to God by twisting Scripture to our own ends.  We need to take warning.

Mark tells us that Jesus commanded the Deaf and mute spirit to come out of the boy.  The boy convulsed greatly and screamed and then suddenly stopped.  The crowd thought the boy was dead.  However, Jesus took the boy by the hand and raised him up and gave him back to his father.  This is a picture of us.  We come to God full of all manner of evil things begging for help.  Though he sets us free, it leaves us in a powerless state like this boy, as if dead.  In his mercy, Jesus takes us by the hand and helps us to get up and walk in the new freedom that he has given us.  Not all have been possessed by demons, but we all have found ourselves helpless and bound to the lies that they have sown throughout our society.  Only Jesus can set us free.

Mark also has the additional information of why the 9 disciples could not cast out the demon.  Jesus told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”  There are two things that stick out in this answer.  First of all, there are kinds of spirits.  Some are apparently harder to cast out than others.  The disciples had not run into this kind before.  The second issue has to do with prayer and fasting.  We are not given the explanation of what prayer and fasting does to enable casting out “stronger” spirits.  However, the greatest work of prayer is to focus us on God and his work.  If we live our lives mostly focused on material things of this world and rarely on God, we will find that we lack power for certain spiritual things.  Jesus points his disciples to this area.  When he is gone, they are going to need to prayer and fast at greater levels in order to do the work that God has for them.

Christ’s Purpose vs His Power

In verses 43-45 we see an interaction between Jesus and his disciples.  All of the displays of power that Jesus had been doing caused them to expect the exact opposite of what Jesus was going to do.  They expected a confrontation with the Romans and the leaders of Israel in which Jesus takes over.  All of the majestic power of Christ was not headed to this objective.  Rather, He was headed to a cross.  Even today, many reject Christ because his answer to the world seems weak and pitiful to them.  What a colossal waste of power, they think to themselves.  This difficulty in understanding God’s ways has been a timeless problem for mankind.  We don’t just think differently, but our thoughts lead in the exact opposite direction.  The bible tells us that even the foolishness of God is far higher than the greatest wisdom of man.  In Luke Jesus says, “let these words sink down into your ears…”  A surface understanding alone will not work.  Jesus was to be betrayed and killed; get it through your head.  If we follow Jesus in a superficial way and ignore all the tough things that he says, we will not get far.  The closer Jesus got to the cross the fewer people who gathered around him, until he was all alone.  Jesus is the Rejected One.  No matter how popular he is in a moment in time, we will all be tested in the long run.  You will be forced to choose.  Whom are you following?  Are you following Jesus or the wise and great of this world?  This is the question that is constantly put before those who wish to follow Jesus.  To follow Jesus is to pick up your own cross expecting to die along with him.  Let these words sink into your ears.

Love Your Enemies

The signature command of Christ has always been the command to love your enemies.  Historically it has been a huge stumbling block.  However, in the western world where we have had a culture based upon Christ’s teachings, it is often twisted to mean something other than what Christ intended.

We always need to approach God’s Word asking this question, “What is the master trying to teach me?”  Instead we often are asking, “What do I think this means.”  Now both questions involve me thinking.  But the first question is more to the point.  It reminds me that I may be missing what the Teacher is trying to teach.  In Luke 6:27-35, Jesus begins to deal with the hearts of those who are being attacked, mistreated, hated, and being taken advantage.  Do other teachings warn those who do the attacking, mistreating, hating, and taking advantage of others?  Yes, but here the master focuses on one side of this equation, the side of the one being injured.

A Call To Love Your Enemies

There is no way around these simple statements of Jesus.  At the end of the day, no matter how much we break down these issues, we are left with a command from Jesus to love our enemies.  This is contrary to man’s sinful nature.  In fact we are quite skilled at co-opting concepts like justice and equity in order to increase evil rather than make things better.  Let us also recognize that these words of Jesus are like a lovely song to our culture.  They sound beautiful and wonderful to us.  But, generally we have no clue what Jesus actually means.  Historically these words would cause people to shrink back as if you had pulled out a poisonous snake.  “What!  Forgive my enemies?  That would be crazy!”  Loving your enemies is the illogical response in this world.

Now in the first part of this Jesus focuses on the actions of love.  Love is not so much a feeling here as it is a choice to do good towards someone who is not doing good towards you.  Thus the command to love is not a command to have wonderful feelings towards another.  Rather, it is to do good things to those who are hating you.  Notice he does not tell us to ignore those who hate us.  That is about the extent of our ability to rise above the ugliness of hatred.  However, Jesus challenges us to pay back good things to those who do not deserve it.

In that sense there is a pattern of reversal in these statements.  If someone curses you then give them a blessing back.  No one wants to be cursed and neither do they feel good when they get cursed.  Under no circumstances are we tempted to bless them back.  Yet, Jesus calls us to give a real blessing rather than a fake, false one.  Those who spitefully use you may make you burn with anger.  However, pray for them.  Jesus is not asking us to pray silent prayers of doom and judgment upon them.  Neither are we to pray for them to have lots of money, success and fame.  We are praying for their eyes to be opened.  We are praying against the darkness that has blinded them to God’s Word and His Way.

When Jesus speaks of being struck on the cheek, he is not bringing up the issue of self defense.  Rather, he is bringing up the issue of being publically dishonored and humiliated.  This can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for most.  Yet, Jesus asks us to turn the other cheek.  In other words, instead of attacking back, or walling ourselves off from them, we remain vulnerable and open to further dishonor.  Why?  The only way they can be saved from such actions is if they run into someone who is different.  When we keep the avenue of communication and relationship open then there is hope for the lost.  But if we shut down these things out of protection or hatred, the person is also being shut off from the Truth.

The last area is when someone takes advantage of us.  In one of the contexts it is clearly between you and a neighbor.  But it is not as clear in others.  It might not just be someone borrowing and not bringing it back.  It might be outright theft, or a soldier abusing their power in order to cease our property.  In each case we do not like it when others take advantage of us.  That is my property.  You have offended me.  Historically people have learned that they might need to just let it go and hide their resentment in order to survive.  But the resentment and hate continues to burn like a fire within them.  Jesus is calling us to something greater than merely surviving dark times.  He is calling believers to be a brilliant light in the midst of such darkness.  If I lose anything for the sake of Christ I can let it go because I know that He will make it right.  Also, God is my supplier.  If someone takes from me knowingly or absent mindedly, I do not need to fret.  God will supply my needs.  He knows if someone has taken from me and will take care of me.  This kind of trust is indicative of a follower of Jesus.

A Call To The Heart Of God

Now in verses 31-35, Jesus begins to probe deeper under the surface than our outward responses.  He is challenging us to understand and embrace the heart of God.  In other words, He is challenging us to be God’s children and learn to embrace His heart.  This begins with a form of the Golden Rule.  Do unto others what you would want them to do unto you.  Now this is not asking what I would want done to me if I had wronged someone else.  We are to simply ask, what would I really want them to do to me?  That is what I will do to them.  The Golden Rule ignores what others have done and focuses simply on what you would want done to you.

This kind of reasoning is begging the question, “What is different about you?”  So what if you were hurt and hated.  Are you also a hurtful and hate-filled person?  You feel that you are righteous because they started it.  But has righteousness poured out of you or vile hatred?  Even sinners love those who love them.  Are you not doing the same thing they are?  Somehow you have reasoned that you are better than them.  But if you truly want to be better then give them something good.  If we operate out of the same motivations of fear, envy, and anger then we are no better than them.  We are not really on God’s side.

In verse 35 there is a present and future tense situation.  We are to do in the present for the sake of a better future.  We too often do things in the present in order to change the present.  “If I punch him back then he will fear me.”  However, this brings us both to a future when we will give an account to God and be found to have fallen short of God’s righteousness.  Following these commands of Jesus may not change your circumstances and it may not stop evil people from continuing to do evil things.  But, you will be rewarded greatly by your Father.  However, if we shrink back from these things there is no reward and the question remains, “Is He really my Father?”  Am I a son of the Most High God?  Don’t be deceived, God cannot be mocked.  There is a day of judgment coming for the wicked who do such things and for those who respond wickedly.  But, God is presently being kind to the wicked.  He has currently left open the door of grace for those who will repent and turn to Jesus.  Thus we too, as his disciples and followers, need to be kind to the wicked.  This keeps the door open for their salvation, yet, does not ensure it.  But Judgment Day is coming.  Don’t let God’s grace or any Grace his followers may show make you think He has called it off.  Ephesians 5:5-7 says, “For this you know that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.  Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.  Therefore do not be partakers with them.”

Also in Romans 2:5-6 it says, “In accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who ‘will render to each one according to his deeds,’”

The spirit of this age is lying to both secularists and Christians.  Both promote a feeling of love and an action of love that rejects Jesus as the Truth.  Both believe that it no longer matters what we do as long as we just love each other.  This is not the message of Jesus.  The message of Jesus is to repent of wickedness and give those who do you wrong good back.  The message of Jesus is that Judgment day is coming and if you want to avoid it you had better put your faith in Him and repent of your own wicked ways.

The Coming Blood Moons II

Today we will finish up this two part series on the blood moons and look at exactly what should we do with this information.   So first let’s just review what is being said.

Bible prophecy refers to the fact that God will use the sun and the moon to signal people on the earth that He is getting ready to bring judgment.  In these descriptions we see evidence that eclipses and or atmospheric disturbances will cause the sun to be dark and the moon to appear blood red.

In looking at the scientific data of when eclipses have happened in the past and will happen in the future, a pattern has emerged.  It is rare for four total lunar eclipses, called tetrads, to happen in a row (54 times in 2,000 years or less than 3 times per century).  But it is even rarer for these “tetrads” to land on the biblical feast days (7 times in 2,000 years or 1 every 300 years).  The last two tetrads that landed on biblical feast days happened within 19 years of each other in 1949 and 1967.  Both these dates happen to be significant events in the life of modern Israel and the next one will begin in April 2014.  Is something significant on the horizon?  Is God signaling believers that He is about to make a change in the status quo?  It sure seems that way.  On top of all this is the fact that there will be a solar eclipse as the religious New Year begins.  Here are the dates:

2014 Apr 14  Passover—Total Lunar Eclipse

2014 Oct 08  Tabernacles—Total Lunar Eclipse

2015 Mar 20  Religious New Year—Solar Eclipse

2015 Apr 04  Passover—Total Lunar Eclipse

Times of the Gentiles

In Luke 21:24-28, Jesus warned His disciples to be alert and recognize the prophetic times.  He also gives a rough outline of the events leading up to His second coming.  They are: Israel defeated and led captive into all the nations, The Times of the Gentiles, Signs in the heavens and on the earth, The Second coming.  Now it is a no brainer that the first two have happened.  Israel was destroyed along with the temple of the Lord.  They were scattered to the nations as God’s grace turned towards the Gentiles.  This times of the Gentiles will continue until it is fulfilled.   Thus as the times of the Gentiles come to a close, God gives signals in the heavens and on the earth that He is getting ready to come back.  So how will we know when the Times of the Gentiles is over?

In Romans 11:11-12, 25-28 we are told that during this time of the Gentiles Israel as a whole would be blind to salvation and the true messiah.  However, when the full number of Gentiles has been brought in then God will turn back to Israel and draw them to a salvation experience.  Thus, as the times of the Gentiles draws to a close, so the time of Israel’s national salvation is drawing near.  God’s turning back to Israel is not a rejection of the church.  Rather, it is an emphatic exclamation point on God’s heart for the lost.  Israel rejects the messiah and God’s riches are given to the Gentiles.  But even more riches will be given to the Gentiles through the drawing of Israel back to God.  Israel’s salvation will be proof that what God did in sending His Gospels to the Gentiles was indeed righteous.  So a dark time of tribulation detailed in the book of Revelation will come upon the unbelieving world and in this dark time Israel will come to see its sin and turn in repentance to Jesus.  This is spoken of in Zechariah 12:10.  Here the prophet says that Israel will look upon the one whom they pierced and a spirit of grace and repentance will be poured out upon them.  They will mourn  over what they did to Jesus Christ the Firstborn of the Sons of God.

Now in Luke 21:36 Jesus told His disciples to watch and pray that they would be counted worthy to escape this time of Great Tribulation.  The key is not to be so fascinated with blood moons, the nation of Israel, or weather anomalies that we lose sight of the other things we should be doing.  We should be praying for ourselves, for each other as believers, and for the salvation of the lost around us.  We should also be an active witness of the salvation of Jesus to those who are lost.  The blood moons should only add another signal to us from our Lord to be even more confident in our prayers and in our witness.  It should cause us to separate ourselves even more from the temptations and seductions of this age.

So let me encourage you, these dates are not important in and of themselves.  Historically it has been either before, in the middle or after the tetrads that something has happened.  These are not predictions of the rapture or the second coming.  They are simply signals from our Lord to not be asleep spiritually and to be about His business.

Yet, just as the spring Feasts of the Lord prophetically pointed to the first Coming of Christ, so the Fall feasts prophetically point to His second.  The first coming events happened on the very feast days: Jesus, the Lamb of God, was slain on Passover.  He was then buried and became our heavenly bread on Unleaved Bread.  He was resurrected along with a select group of saints on the feast of Firstfruits.  And, He poured out the Holy Spirit to enable a global harvest on the feast of Pentecost or Weeks.  Now Christians have debated for years whether the Rapture is actually going to happen on one of these Fall feasts.  I am of the opinion that our Lord wanted us to understand the times without being focused on figuring out what day He will come.  Thus I encourage you, keep your eye on Jesus and the duties that He has given you.  Keep sowing the seed, watering it, and harvesting as the Lord provides.  When it is time to go He will let you know.  Maranatha!
